Offering Time, Blessing Time? – PART 1

omotayo OlaleyeRom 12:1-2

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life-and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.

Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into without thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. (The Message)

‘Take your everyday, ordinary life and place it before God as an offering” (Rom 12:1a). I find convenience in taking offerings to church on Sundays, or during weekly services, and I guess almost everyone takes no offense with such offerings. But placing my daily routine before the screening eyes of God, receiving a reception or rejection without lobbying the consistent God, before taking any decision, is a high calling!

God is particularly interested in all, including duties at home as husbands, wives, children, servants etc. It also extends to our jobs or duties at places of work, as students, employers, employees etc.  Now, I believe that was the missing point in Cain’s offering. He wanted to create an impression of being a fat donor, yet, holding back his intents and thoughts from God’s approval. He wanted a sacrifice tag, without the living life option.

Many of us separate our daily lives from worship, offering or sacrifice. On the contrary, what we consider as offering or worship e.g. money put in the usher’s bag, praise worship in church etc will not be accepted by God if our everyday life is crooked and unwholesome. For example, a woman who fails to respect her husband is already presenting a crooked sacrifice of her wifely duties to God and she should not expect to be blessed by God for the money she puts in the offering basket. A disobedient child should not feel good when he performs a dance in the teen’s church dance group. A man who prepares a sub-standard report for his boss should not deceive himself that he is presenting any acceptable sacrifice when he teaches at Sunday school. A worker who clocks a wrong time in the attendance time book in the office, but brings the tithe of his salary to church, is already on leave in the schedules of fulfilment.

On the flip side, if we live our ordinary everyday life in such a way that is acceptable to God, we are bound to see ourselves lifted up and souls won to God’s kingdom.  Look at the Egyptian midwives who refused to kill the Hebrew male children as directed by Pharaoh, God saw their attitude as reverence and worship. He was moved to give them their own families (Ex 1:15-21). Another example is Rebecca who fed the camels of Abraham’s servant and God accepted her offering and gave her Isaac as husband (Gen 24:15-28). There is no quality offering you give God that He will not bless you in return. Consequently, you stand to gain a lot if you worship God with your life and earns pains if you choose to throw scriptural caution into the winds of corruption. We must be well guided in our thoughts and decisions. Stop serving God a delicious, fat meal and offerings with plates of dirts and immorality. He desires to drink your worship, but the tumbler must be crystal clean, transparent and decent. The sacrifices of the wicked is an abomination before God. If you assume your money is God’s priority above and beyond the kind of life you live, you have sunk into septic tank of deception.

Therefore, next time you are at your desk as a customer service officer and you talk to the customer anyhow, you have offered God a sub-standard offering. Anytime your boss gives you a report to write and you don’t do a thorough job, your sacrifice is dead. Next time your in-laws visit and you give them the worst meat in your pot, know that you have presented your body as an unacceptable sacrifice to God. You never can tell who is watching you and is being discouraged from accepting Christ because of your behaviour. Jesus says it is better; to tie a millstone around the neck of anyone who causes another to stumble (Matt 18: 6, Mk 9:42, Lk 17:2). From today, before you execute that contract or sell to that customer or run an errand for your parents, decide to do it in a manner that will be acceptable to God.
